Keeping Pets and Children Safe around Bonfire Night in Keighley, Oakworth, Haworth and  Oxenhope

With Bonfire Night on November 5th, and many events happening all around this time of year, it’s important to prepare for the festivities while ensuring the safety and well-being of your pets, children, and others who may be affected, for example, veterans. We understand that fireworks in Keighley, Oakworth, Haworth and  Oxenhope can be both exciting and distressing. Taking a few precautions can make a big difference. Here are some essential tips for keeping your loved ones safe during the celebrations.

Create a Safe Space for Pets

Fireworks can be unsettling for pets, so it’s crucial to create a calm and secure environment for them. Ensure your pets have a quiet space indoors where they can retreat when fireworks start. This could be a cosy room or a designated safe area with their bed, toys, and water. Even sparklers can be risky if not used properly so it’s important to monitor young children and explain the risks to older children too.

Check that all gates and doors are securely closed, and consider keeping your pets indoors during the fireworks display. Offering your pets distractions can help divert their attention from the noise of fireworks. Provide them with their favourite toys or treats to keep them occupied. For children, consider organising indoor activities or games that can help them stay entertained and less focused on the fireworks outside.

Prepare for Emergencies

Have a plan in place in case of an emergency. Keep a list of emergency contacts handy, including your vet’s number, and know the location of the nearest pet emergency clinic. For children, ensure they know how to contact you or another trusted adult if they become separated or need help.
