We’re absolutely chuffed to share that Skipton has officially been crowned the happiest place to live in Great Britain, according to Rightmove’s latest Happy at Home Index - and honestly, we’re not surprised in the slightest. At Davies Properties, we feel incredibly lucky to be right on the doorstep of such a brilliant town.
Rightmove spoke to thousands of residents across more than 200 areas, asking people how they feel about where they live – from friendliness and community spirit to access to green space and local services. And Skipton absolutely smashed it this year, climbing to the top spot after coming second in 2020 and sixth last year.
Locals praised Skipton for its gorgeous countryside, welcoming atmosphere, and reliable essentials like schools and GP services. People also said they feel comfortable being themselves here, and many feel the area is affordable enough to live well compared with other parts of the country.
While Skipton didn’t score quite as highly for job opportunities or living close to friends and family, the positives far outweighed the rest. With an average asking price of £326,093-lower than the national average-Skipton also offers fantastic value for anyone looking to make a move.
Richmond-upon-Thames took second place this year, followed by Camden in third. Over in Scotland, Stirling came out on top, and in Wales, the happiest place was Anglesey.
One of the main themes of the study was that people living in rural, coastal, woodland or riverside areas tended to feel happier than those in more built-up locations. No surprise there – nothing quite beats fresh air and a good view. And those living near a national park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty were also happier on average.
Happiness also tends to rise with age, with those aged 65+ feeling the most content, and 18–24 year-olds feeling the least settled.
But back to Skipton - a town that’s clearly winning hearts for all the right reasons.
We’re genuinely proud to live and work so close to such a thriving, feel-good place. Well done, Skipton - you deserve every bit of this recognition!
